Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Pleasure District, 1886

Comments - Beautiful triptych of courtesans strolling through the pleasure district on a summer night, accompanied by servants carrying lanterns. The beauties are elegantly dressed in their finest kimono and obi, with a variety of striking designs, including a lion, a carp leaping up a waterfall, a dragon and swirling clouds, flowers, and birds with long tail feathers. They wear tall black lacquer wooden geta clogs. Beauties and patrons look down from the upper story of the teahouses lining the street, the eaves hung with red paper lanterns. In the center, a large cherry tree covered with pink and white blossoms frames the evening sky. Beautifully detailed with embossing on the white kimono trim and burnishing on the clogs. An attractive subject.
