Battle of the Southeast Gate of the Palace in the Tales of the Hogen and Heiji Wars

Comments - Dramatic scene of a battle taking place at the southeast gate of a palace during the Hogan and Heiji Wars in the mid-twelfth century. At right, a warrior on a black horse gallops through the snowy courtyard, brandishing a sword in each hand, an enemy tumbling backwards over his shoulder. At left, a general in a horned battle helmet on a dappled horse at turns back to watch with a stern expression while samurai on foot come pouring out of the palace gate in the center, the walls of the fortress extending into the distance. A great design filled with energy and action, with wonderfully detailed figures and expressive faces. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in their collection.
