Man Preparing to Commit Suicide, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Unusual kabuki scene of a man preparing to commit ritual suicide. He has pushed down his kimono to the waist to bare his chest, and a sickle lies in his lap. He looks up with an anguished grimace, the hair at the sides of his head sticking out wildly. A low screen behind him is decorated with butterflies, and the plaster wall beyond is cracked and in need of repair. An expressive figure.

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 9 1/4"
