Samurai and Ghostly Statue, 1850

Comments - Eerie kabuki scene of a confrontation between two samurai from the play "Ehon gappo gatsuji." At right, a nobleman steps through the foliage, frowning angrily as he faces a samurai sitting on the base of a stone statue. The warrior quickly draws his sword, ready to do battle with his adversary. The statue of a Buddhist deity appears to come to life behind them, the face and hands human, while the body remains lifeless stone. She grimaces with a worried expression as she reaches for the seated samurai. An intriguing image with a wonderfully detailed setting and expressive figures.
