Shin KyogokuShin Kyogoku

Comments - Beautiful panoramic view of the busy Shin Kyogoku street in Kyoto, with pedestrians enjoying the evening cool. The lively city street was lined with theaters and shops, and is still existence today as a popular shopping arcade. Stars twinkle in the night sky above drifting clouds shadowed in gray. Born in Kyoto, not much information is available about the artist Buntou Hayashi. He was a painter, but this is perhaps the only woodblock subject that he did. In 1923, he was selected for the prestigious Teiten (Imperial Exhibition) national arts competition. This lovely design has a very painterly quality. A wonderful early twentieth-century shin-hanga design and a rare find.
