Encampment at Tottori Castle, 1884

Series; The New Biography of Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Shinsen Taikoki)

Encampment at Tottori Castle, 1884 - Intriguing image of Hideyoshi and several of his men atop a hill overlooking Tottori's Castle the night before attacking it in 1581. Retaining his calm, he holds a reed flute to his mouth, blowing on the instrument as one of the retainers gestures at the fortress below. He wears a brown robe patterned with egrets in flight and grasses over his armor, and a black court cap. His men wear armor and carry spears, their swords at their sides. A handsome design with birds flying past a softly glowing full moon in the dark night sky. Beautifully detailed with fine line work and soft shading in the sky. Includes a dusting of mica along the top of the hill. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
