Akechi Mitsuhide at Ogurisu, 1883

Series; The New Biography of Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Shinsen Taikoki)

Akechi Mitsuhide at Ogurisu, 1883 - Handsome scene of the treacherous warrior Akechi Mitsuhide in a bamboo grove at Ogurisu, kneeling at left as a messenger reads him a letter. A retainer of the great Oda Nobunaga, Mitsuhide briefly seized power by betraying his lord and forcing Nobunaga to commit suicide. Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu rushed to capture Mitsuhide, defeating him at the Battle of Yamazaki. Stopping in Ogurisu while fleeing, Mitsuhide was killed in a bamboo grove there. Here, he listens with a solemn expression as he leans against a pole arm, a suit of armor, helmet, and sword on the ground beside him. In the distance, a guard keeps a lookout. A great atmospheric scene with a beautifully detailed setting.
