The Subscription List

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the popular play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho), a tale about Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his men trying to sneak across the Ataka border disguised as yamabushi or mountain priests. The aristocrat Togashi Soga Saemon questions them, suspecting correctly that the young porter is actually Yoshitsune. To allay suspicions, the warrior monk Benkei grabs a blank scroll and pretends to read a list of subscribers to a temple building fund. Yoshitsune kneels quietly at his side while Togashi glares at him angrily. From left, the actors are Suketakaya Takasuke, Ichikawa Danjuro, and Ichikawa Sadanji. Text fills the space above the actors, and the background is shaded from bright pink to white to green. A colorful Meiji era design.
