Princess Wakana and Giant Spider, 1871

Comments - Fantastic scene of Princess Wakana conjuring up an enormous spider. She holds a scroll tightly between her hands, grinning as she looks over her shoulder at her two companions, her long hair falling loosely over her shoulders. In the center, a beauty grimaces angrily, while the fellow at left glares at the princess with a tight-lipped frown while hiding a large knife behind his back. He wears a sash with white pompoms over his robe, like those worn by yamabushi or mountain priests. The giant spider fills the background, a delicate web spread between its legs. From left, the actors are Nakamura Shikan, Onoe Kikugoro, and Bando Mitsugoro. A great dramatic design and the first time we've offered this Kunichika triptych.
