Series; Collection of New Ukiyo-style Beauties

January: Playing Cards, 1924 - Lovely shin-hanga portrait of a seated beauty playing a game of cards. She looks down with a somewhat sad expression, seemingly lost in her thoughts as she holds a few cards in her hands. She wears a deep violet kimono patterned with stylized cherry blossoms and pine sprigs over a white under robe. Her hair is pulled softly back into a large bun, adorned with a red lacquer comb and a floral ornament trimmed with short strings of beads. One arm rests atop a large blue and white ceramic basin holding gold fish. This subject appears in Amy Reigle Newland's book "The Female Image: 20th Century Prints of Japanese Beauties." We rarely see works by this artist.
