Series; Five Figures of Modern Beauties, 1953
Tatsumi Shimura's Five Figures of Modern Beauties - Tatsumi Shimura worked as an illustrator and painter, becoming well known for his portraits of beautiful women. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Shimura designed several woodblock prints of traditionally dressed beauties, including the five print series "Five Figures of Modern Beauties" in 1953. Expertly carved by Chushichi Nakagawa and printed by Ryuji Onodera, these woodblocks are superb technical achievements. This series is illustrated in Amy Reigle Newland's book "The Female Image: 20th Century Prints of Japanese Beauties." Shimura's lovely, elegant woodblock portraits are rarely seen in the market and are a nice choice for a collector of shin-hanga bijin-ga. Embossed title in bottom margin.
