A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

The War at Kagoshima, 1877 - Dramatic triptych depicting women warriors in battle at Kagoshima during the Satsuma Rebellion. Their kimono sleeves tied back with narrow sashes, the women deftly wield swords and naginata, on foot and on horseback. In the center, a woman grips her naginata high overhead as her horse rears back on its hind hoofs, a samurai charging her at spear point. At right, an attacker grabs a beauty from behind as she struggles to free herself, swinging her sword overhead. Flames and smoke pour from the tower of a castle behind them, lighting up the night sky. An incredible image showing these wives and daughters of samurai who joined the rebellion against the Meiji government. A fine Yoshitoshi battle scene, realistically drawn and detailed.
