Comments - Terrific illustration of the Second National Industrial Exposition held in 1881 in Ueno Park. The enormous Shojo Fountain dominates the scene, with water splashing from an urn on the backs of colorful figures into a large scalloped basin. The Meiji Empress stands at right, surrounded by her attendants. The emperor sits among dignitaries at left, wearing a military dress uniform and plume hat. The elegant brick Fine Arts Museum building fills the background at right, framed by blossoming cherry trees. The spraying water is done with metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone. An intriguing look at this historic event, with lively color and wonderful detail, including embossing on the white kimono trim.
