Outside Toyama Castle

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of warriors in the snow near Toyama Castle from the play "Toyama-jo Yukidoke no Kiyomizu." The samurai at right glares angrily down at his companion, gripping a bow in one hand and a pair of arrows in the other. The fellow in the center stumbles backwards, throwing out his hand in self-defense as the warrior behind him reaches for his sword. At left, a samurai wearing a fine red vest over a suit of armor grimaces at the men, holding a rustic wooden ladder. Snowflakes fall heavily against the blue sky, blanketing the pine trees behind the group, and three of the men wear straw raincoats over their armor. From left, the actors are Nakamura Shikan, Ohtani Baju, Ichikawa Sadanji, and Onoe Kikugoro. Wonderful detail in the expressive faces and clothing. An intriguing subject and a beautiful crisp, clean print.
