Kataoka Nizaemon VIII as Tamaya Shinbei, 1861 - Handsome kabuki portrait of Kataoka Nizaemon VIII as Tamaya Shinbei, looking up with a sullen frown as he takes a toothpick from his mouth. He stands next to a tea stall with a red placard bearing a picture of a goat at upper right, a rolled up mat leaning against the side of the rustic building. He wears a blue and gray triangular print coat over a striped kimono, his hair pulled back into a thinning topknot. A shaped inset at upper left shows a man looking suspiciously over his shoulder. At upper right, blossoms, gingko leaves, and pine sprigs frame the title cartouche. The other actor is Ichimura Uzaemon XIII. Beautiful color and detail in this interesting subject.
