Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Attack at a Shrine, 1885

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of an attack taking place at a shrine. In the center, a warrior grips his sword overhead to block a blow from the samurai behind him. At right, another fellow in a checked kimono draws his own weapon. Another samurai watches at left, holding a red paper lantern high and frowning. An ornately carved and painted door fills the background, with red railings below and a blossoming cherry branch framing the night sky. From left, the actors are Nakamura Dengoro, Iwai Matsunosuke, Kataoka Gado as Norazashi, Bando Kakitsu, and Onoe Kikugoro. An intriguing subject with large expressive figures and vibrant color.
