Entertainments in the Garden, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Beautiful triptych showing Prince Genji and a pair of beauties next to an ancient plum tree at night. The young nobleman stands at right, smiling happily as he looks back at the women. One carries his sword, while the other holds a small tray covered with a cloth and carries an elegant red lacquer box. The delicate white blossoms contrast beautifully with the dark night sky, the rugged trunk of the tree rendered in bold calligraphic strokes. A lovely subject with soft shading, fine detail in the elegant fabrics, and beautiful color.
