Sumo Wrestler Preparing to Commit Suicide, 1884 - Interesting kabuki scene of the sumo wrestler Gorozo preparing to commit suicide. He sits in the center, pulling his robe open to bare his chest, a sword wrapped in white cloth in his other hand. At left, two women watch, the younger beauty throwing her hand out at her side in alarm. At right, the otokodate or street knight Banzui Chobei looks up from the long letter he is reading with a sober frown. From left, the actors are Nakamura Kahoru, Nakamura Fukusuke, Ichikawa Sadanji, and Ichikawa Danjuro. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black kimono collars, and metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the blade and the river on the red panels at upper left. The first time we've come across this Chikanobu subject.
