Sake Ceremony at the Shogun's Palace, 1897 - Handsome triptych of a group of daimyo and retainers receiving cups of sake during a ceremony at the shogun's palace. Three men sit in the center next to trays piled high with shallow sake cups, offering cups and pouring sake from long-handled servers for the lords who kneel respectfully before them with outstretched arms. A row of samurai waits quietly for their turn, as those who have completed the ritual pass by a servant at far left to receive a new kimono on the way out. A terrific view of this solemn event, with fine detail in the intricate fabric patterns and touches of burnishing.
