Eight Dog Warriors Kabuki Scene, 1852 - Terrific kabuki triptych depicting a scene from the kabuki play "Satomi Hakkenden," based on the famous story of "Nanso Satomi and the Eight Dog Warriors." These great warriors were the mystical offspring of Princess Fuse, the daughter of Lord Anzai of the Satomi Clan, and a dog. From left, the actors are Sawamura Chojuro V as Yamabayashi Fusahachi, Arashi Kichisaburo III in the role of Inuta Kobungo, Otani Tomoemon IV as the elderly servant Tanaya Bungohei, Seki Sanjuro III as Inukai Genpachi, and Bando Shuka I playing Inuzuka Shino. The young Inuta Kobungo pushes off the boat carrying his two brothers, the scowling Inukai Genpachi sitting in the center wearing a magnificent robe patterned with a dragon and swirling clouds. A handsome print with fine expressive detail in the faces, soft shading in the water and sky, and nice wood grain impression in the background.
