Comments - Interesting depiction of the famous legend of "obasute," which actually means "abandoning an old woman." Long ago, a ruler who disliked elderly people declared that anyone over the age of sixty must be carried deep into the mountains and left there to die. Deeply saddened but aware that he had no choice but to do his duty, a young man carried his aged mother on his back into the mountains one day. Along the way, she kept breaking twigs off trees as they passed. When he finally came to the place to leave her, he asked about the twigs. She replied that she had broken them off to mark a trail for him to get home safely. Hearing this, the young man decided to disobey the ruler's order and brought her back home to stay. Nice expressive figures with soft bokashi shading in the landscape.
