Ichikawa Ebijuro I as the Bandit Shutenji, 1852

Series; The Book of the Eight Dog Heroes, 1852

The Book of the Eight Dog Heroes - Handsome design from Kunisada II's 1852 series "The Book of the Eight Dog Heroes," based on the epic novel "Nanso Satomi and the Eight Dog Heroes." It recounts the adventures of eight samurai brothers who are the offspring of a mystical union between Princess Fuse and a dog. Separated at birth, the warriors are unaware of each other until they meet accidentally as adults. Each shares the Japaanese word for dog, "inu," in his name. Each print features a half-length portrait of an expressive figure, set against a night sky. The images are beautifully detailed with extremely fine line work in the hair and soft shading in the backgrounds. A rarely seen kabuki series and a nice choice for a collector interested in this classic samurai tale.
