Fighting in the Snow; Loyal Nursemaid and Child, 1881

Comments - Interesting triptych divided diagonally to present two different kabuki scenes. At left, two men fight hand-to-hand under a falling snow. The man at right grabs the boatman at left by the wrist as he turns his head away. The boatman does likewise, while throwing his other arm up against the night sky. At right, the loyal nursemaid Masaoka holds a lacquer tray piled with sweets as her son, Senmatsu, looks up eagerly at her side. The food has been poisoned as part of a plot to kill the young heir of the Date Clan, and sadly, after Senmatsu rushes forward to taste the candy first, he dies. A great design with large, expressive figures. Includes embossing on the white kimono collar and burnishing in Masaoka's black kimono.

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 28 1/8"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. Vertical fold at side. Slight toning and soiling, a couple light stains. Please see photos for details.
