Genji Reading a Letter outside a Garden Gate, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Beautiful night scene of Prince Genji standing outside fenced garden, reading a long letter by the light of a lantern held out by a beauty. He smiles at her as he unrolls the scroll, while she looks down at the young man beside her, who turns his face eagerly up towards the prince. A very young attendant tugs on Genji's hand, urging him to enter the garden where another lovely woman stands in the open gate. The delicate pink and white blossoms of a cherry tree stand out against the dark evening sky, sending a shower of petals down over the group. A beautiful triptych with lovely color and fine detail in the sumptuous kimono fabrics. A wonderful illustration from the classic "Tale of Genji."
