Sawamura Tossho as Nagoya Sanza, 1869

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Sawamura Tossho as the disgraced samurai Nagoya Sanza. He was banished by his clan after a valuable scroll in his care was stolen by the wicked Fuwa Banzaemon. Here, he looks up with a suspicious frown and he stands outside a shrine. He wears a monk's mantle over his kimono, and holds a deep basket hat upright in his hand. A nice expressive figure, detailed with embossing on the white flowers of the black sash around his waist.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 9 1/2" + left margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse from previous backing. Wrinkling, slight toning. Please see photos for details.
