Sawamura Tanosuke III as a Fireman, 1860

Series; Flowers of Edo, Excitement at Night

Sawamura Tanosuke III as a Fireman, 1860 - Handsome kabuki portrait of Sawamura Tanosuke III in the role of a fireman, looking up into the night sky with a sly smile as he holds the knot of a robe tied over his shoulders. He wears a quilted robe with a striking image of a snake, the intricate stitching carefully detailed, over a black under garment, a dotted towel draped over his shoulder. A spattering of hand-applied dark red pigment simulates ashes drifting in the wind. A nice design.

Image Size - 13 1/2" x 9 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Very slight paper remnants on reverse at edges from previous mounting. Wormhole at edge, repaired. Slight toning. Writing in red on background. Please see photos for details.
