47 Ronin outside Moronao's Palace Gate, 1884

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene from the classic play "Kanadehon Chushingura" of the 47 ronin assembling outside the entrance to Moronao's palace just before the night attack. In the center, Nakamura Shikan appears as Otaka Bungo, gripping an enormous wooden mallet over his head as he prepares to smash in the wooden gate. At right, Ichikawa Danjuro plays Oboshi Yuranosuke, the leader of the ronin, gripping a spear and looking up with a serious frown. He carries a tasseled command baton in his other hand. All of the samurai wear the dogtooth bordered robe over their armor, some in purple and others in black. A handsome design with lively color.
