Jirozaemon Attacking the Courtesan Yatuhashi, 1850

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of the spurned Sano Jirozaemon attacking the courtesan Yatsuhashi of the Nakamanjiya after learning that she has another lover. He grimaces angrily as he holds the blade of his sword between his hands. She turns away from him with a playful smile, offering him a long letter, not believing that he is actually planning to kill her. She wears a plum colored kimono patterned with irises and trimmed with a red iris print collar over a red under robe, tied with an obi that reverses from blue to red dots. A poem slip hanging from a bell beneath the eaves flutters in the evening wind above. The actors are Iwai Kumesaburo III as Yatsuhashi and Ichikawa Ebizo V as Jirozaemon. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black kimono and handsome wood grain impression in the night sky.
