Scene from Imoseyama Onna Teikin, 1859

Comments - Lovely illustration from the kabuki play "Imoseyama onna teikin," which tells the story of a young couple who fall in love, unaware that their families are bitter rivals. Each family owns an estate on opposite sides of the Yoshino River, which rushes through the left of the scene. The beauty Hinadori kneels at left, smiling happily as she looks up at her mother, Koshitsu Sadataka. On the opposite bank at right, the young nobleman Koganosuke Kiyofune bows respectfully as he listens to a lecture from this father, the worried Daihanji Kiyosumi. Blossoming cherry trees frame scene at lower left, and dot the banks of the river in the distance. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tanosuke III, Onoe Kikugoro IV, Nakamura Fukusuke I, and Kataoka Nizaemon VIII. An attractive design with a handsome setting.
