Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Unhappy Beauty

Woodblock Covers for Novels - Interesting design from a group of Meiji era woodblock covers for short novels or stories, most likely issued as supplements to a newspaper. These tales were sometimes published in multiple parts. Each features a small scene from a story along with a vertical text panel in black and white. The vivid red background is patterned with blossoming cherry branches with pink and white flowers and green leaves, creating a striking decorative effect. A great popular culture item that would make a nice addition to a Meiji era collection.
