Waitress Serving Sake, 1865

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of a waitress serving sake to a samurai. She holds out a lacquer tray with a blue and white cup on it to the customer at right while looking back over her shoulder at an otokodate or street knight. She smiles at him sweetly, but he looks up from the letter he is reading with an angry frown. At upper right, a kettle heats on a brazier and a rack holds additional cups beneath glowing paper lanterns. Nice expressive figures in an interesting setting.
