Kumagai and Atsumori at the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of the Minamoto general Kumagai Jiro Naozane about to capture the young Taira Prince Atsumori during the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani. The pink-faced Kumagai gallops after him on a black horse, leaning forward as he grips the purple and white striped reins. At left, Atsumori waves his folding fan at his enemy, seemingly unalarmed by his fate. He wears a pink and white tunic patterned with the Taira butterfly crest over his suit of armor, his hair falling loosely over his shoulders. A great image from this famous tale with large colorful figures set off by a deep blue violet background, detailed with burnishing on the black horse.
