Conversation in an Iris Garden, 1888

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of two courtesans and three men having a meal in a room overlooking an iris garden. In the center, Yatsushashi looks over her shoulder with a slightly worried expression as she extends a slender pipe to Sano Jirozaemon at far left, who stares back at her with an angry frown. The couple at right watch their companions with interest, the man scowling while the beauty looks up. A low red lacquer table before them holds a bowl of food and a platter of fish. Behind them, wooden walkways extend out over the pond dotted with blossoming purple irises. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji, Bando Tsurujuro, Nakamura Fukusuke, Ichikawa Kodanji, and Sawamura Gennosuke. Nice expressive figures in an attractive setting, detailed with burnishing on the black kimono.
