Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the tale of the samurai Wada Shizuma and his quest to avenge his father's death at the hands of the evil Matagoro. To do so, he launches a surprise attack while Matagoro is traveling through Iga Pass. At upper right, Matagoro lunges forward with a spear to attack Shizuma, who appears in a white robe shaded with yellow. Shizuma blocks the blow with his upright blade. In the center, another samurai uses his own weapon to fend off a spear. At left, a man in a blue tie-dyed kimono grips a heavy wooden beam over his shoulders, his sleeves tied back with ropes and a dotted sash wrapped around his forehead. Pine trees frame the scene against a dark red background. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji, Nakmaura Sojuro, Ichikawa Danjuro, Onoe Kikugoro, and Ichikawa Kodanji. Nice detail in the expressive faces and the hair.
