Street Knights outside a Temple, 1885

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of three otokodate or street knights standing outside the fence of a temple. At left, Nozarashi Gosuke stares at his companions with a frown, his brows furrowed. He wears a green kimono patterned with white motifs that resemble stylized skulls. The fellow in the center grimaces back at him, gritting his teeth. His olive green kimono features a striking image of a Buddhist deity with a halo holding a circular stone or jewel as he faces a fierce dragon. The man at right looks up at the red sky, seemingly unconcerned with the confrontation between the two other men. From left, the actors are Kataoka Gado, Onoe Kikugoro, and Bando Kakitsu. A handsome design, nicely detailed with burnishing on the black kimono collars and trim.
