Reading a Poem by Lamp Light, 1854

Comments - Attractive kabuki scene of a beauty reading a poem slip by the light of a lamp partially covered with a blue floral robe. She stares at the verse unhappily, her eyes wide and mouth slightly agape. She wears a blue kimono bordered with flowers and straw trellises over a red under robe, her hair pulled back into a smooth bun adorned with a comb and clusters of tiny blue flowers. An elegant black lacquer stand behind her holds a print kimono, and a mirror rests atop a matching lacquer chest. An interesting image with a nicely detailed setting.
