Actors as Musicians with 47 Ronin Roles, 1851

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene featuring actors as musicians, with a circular inset in each panel showing another actor in a role from the famous drama about the 47 ronin, "Kanadehon Chushingura." At left, Bando Shuka I appears as a beauty playing a drum with drumsticks. The circular inset above shows Ichimura Takenojo V as Oboshi Yuranosuke. In the center panel, Arashi Kichisaburo also plays a drum, while the circular inset features Bando Shuka I as Okaru. At right, Ichikawa Kuzo II taps out a rhythm on a hand drum, while Ichikawa Danjuro VIII appears as Hayano Kampei in the circular inset. Cherry blossoms frame the scene above. A handsome design with expressive figures.
