Scene from Toshitoku Soga Matsu no Shimadai

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play " Scene from Toshitoku Soga Matsu no Shimadai," a drama about the Soga Brothers. Here, the pair announces their intention to avenge the murder of their father by the nobleman Kudo Saemon Suketsune, who sits on a platform in the center. At left, the younger brother Soga Goro Tokimune has leapt to his feet, shaking his fist in the air as he glares at Suketsune, who looks aback at him with a worried expression. At right, the older brother Soga Juro Sukenari frowns as he watches the daimyo suspiciously out of the corners of his eyes. With one hand, he has grabbed hold of the collar of one of Suketsune's footmen. From left, the actors are Nakamura Fukusuke I, Kataoka Nizaemon VIII, Sawamura Tossho II, and Nakamura Aizo. A classic image from this popular tale.
