Iwai Kumesaburo III as Oiso no Tora, 1855

Comments - Charming kabuki portrait of Iwai Kumesaburo III as the courtesan Oiso no Tora. She smiles happily as she looks over her shoulder, wearing a gray kimono patterned with plovers in flight above waves and seashells, a reference to the plover symbol associated with her sweetheart, Soga Juro. Her obi features a striking design of a fierce lion. Blossoming cherry branches frame the night sky above. A lovely design.

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 9 3/4" + top margin as shown
