The Nun Seigen, 1886

Comments - Terrific scene from a tragic kabuki play about Princess Hanako, who becomes a nun after learning that her fiance, Matsuwakamaru, has died. She goes crazy after her sister, Princess Sakura, becomes engaged to a man who looks just like her fiance (and in fact, is, disguised as the nobleman Yorikuni). Reduced to begging, the deranged Seigen is shown with a tattered hat hanging at her back as she rides in a ferry poled by the villainous boatman Sota. In another boat at left, Matsuwakamara, in disguise as Yorikuni, retrieves Sakura's kimono from the river. Red flames and smoke rise from the fire basket extending over the end of the boat,. Cherry blossoms frame the night sky above, with petals drifting down across the scene, a symbol of the intransigence of life. A great design.
