Beauty Murdering an Elderly Woman, 1852

Comments - Dramatic and gory kabuki scene of a beauty murdering an elderly woman from the female version of the famous play "Natsu Matsuri." Standing in for the male Danshichi, the beauty grins as she raises her sword above her head in the pouring rain, eerie bloody handprints scattered across her checked robe. Her victim sprawls on the ground, bleeding from wounds to her face, torso, and arm, gripping her own bloody weapon. Beyond the stone wall behind them, a festival procession with floats makes its way down a street lined with daimyo's mansions. From left, the actors are Seki Sanjuro III as Mikawaya no Giheiji and Bando Shuka I as Danshichi Okaji. A memorable image.
