Prince Genji on a Cherry Blossom Viewing Outing, 1860

Comments - Beautiful scene from the "Tale of Genji" showing Prince Genji and his companions on an outing to view the blossoming cherry trees. The young nobleman walks ahead at left, pausing to wait for the beauty following behind him, who is assisted by an attendant leading her by the hand. She wears a colorful kimono patterned with peonies and trimmed with bows and tassels, a walking staff in her other hand. Two women and a footman bring up the rear carrying supplies for a picnic. A lovely landscape view with the hilly countryside dotted with trees covered in pale pink and white flowers, and clouds drifting through the valleys and overhead. A charming design.
