Twelve Tanzaku Views of Mt. Fuji - Charming design from an unusual Hiroshige series of twelve views of Mt. Fuji in tanzaku form. Tanzaku or "poem slip" prints are narrow, vertical format woodblocks with a printed verse or space to write a poem. This traditional Japanese form dates back hundreds of years, and is still in use today, with tanazaku decorating bamboo branches for the annual Tanabata Festival. This interesting Meiji era series depicts Mt. Fuji from various vantage points, often as only a white shape on the horizon with no black outline, adding to the illusion of distance. We have never come across this series before and can find no other reference to it. A great item for a collector interesting in Hiroshige images.
