Comments - Interesting scene of a disagreement between Yamana Sozen and his son-in-law, Hosokawa Katsumoto. The pair was feuding over their backing for rival successors to the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, which eventually turned into the eleven-year Onin War. Gathered in a palace with their retainers, the men argue unhappily. Sozen is shown at left wearing a black kamishimo patterned with white circular crests. He leans forward aggressively, his eyes glaring while a courtier behind him tries to restrain him. In the center, Katsumoto kneels behind a reclining man dressed in a tan robe with the crest of the Ashikaga Clan on the sleeve and shoulders. The men seated around the room exchange angry glance, looking suspiciously at their enemies. A standing screen at right illustrates the humiliation of Kanshin, a future Chinese general who allowed himself to be humbled by crawling through the legs of a fisherman rather than kill his challenger and become a criminal. An intriguing triptych with expressive figures and a handsomely detailed interior setting.

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three attached panels. Light vertical folds. Remnants of paper hinge mounts on reverse at top edge.
