Angry Woman Warrior, 1874

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene showing a woman warrior glaring angrily at a samurai, who frowns sheepishly in response. She grips a scroll in her outstretched hand, as if taunting the samurai with it. She wears a beautiful floral kimono over her armor, and her hair is elegantly arranged with many hairpins and combs. At left, the samurai Chichibu no Shoji Shigetada wears formal court dress, his purple kimono subtly burnished with a geometric pattern. At right, the boatman Munekiyo wields an oar, looking down with an intensely focused expression. A great design with large figures, the vibrant color of their clothing set off by the dark shaded background. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro, Nakamura Shikan, and Bando Hikosaburo. Nicely detailed with faint embossing in the white obi and a burnished pattern on the beauty's black kimono. A handsome triptych.
