Series; Select Five Elements

Metal, 1852 - Fantastic triptych from a Kuniyoshi series pairing scenes from the famous "Tale of Genji" with the five elements. Here, Prince Genji sits on a cushion at the edge of a verandah overlooking a peony garden filled with gorgeous oversize blossoms. He is accompanied by two beauties dressed in exquisite kimono, the robe on the woman at left shaded from deep blue to pale yellow with a pattern of red blossom and lush foliage. An ornate lantern decorated with colorful beads hangs in the center, and rugged mountains can be seen in the distance with a waterfall rushing over the cliffs. Beautifully colored, with faint embossing on the white kimono collars and trim and the pink under robe at right. A lovely design.
