Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Kagekiyo, 1861

Comments - Great kabuki portrait from the play "Honcho Nijushiko" of Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Kagekiyo, wearing a straw mat as a coat. He leans forward with a frown, his brows slightly furrowed, a pipe in one hand and the other holding a couple stalks of bamboo. He wears a kimono made from a patchwork of fabrics over a suit of armor trimmed with fur cuffs. A torn, dotted cloth covers his bushy hair, and a red flame dances at lower left. A striking design, beautifully detailed, with fine bokashi shading and handsome wood grain impression in the night sky. Includes a dusting of mica across the top of the print.

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 5/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. A few creases, slight soiling at edges. Notation in red ink [?] at side, a couple whitish spots. Please see photos for details.
