Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from a play based on the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani between the Taira and the Minamoto. At right, the Minamoto warrior Kumagai Jiro Naozane gallops along the rocky shore on a black horse, angrily waving his fan at the young Taira Prince Atsumori at left. The youth strikes a pose with his feet spread widely, ready to face his enemy and meet his death. In the center, the elderly Ogiya Kazusa and his wife, Omaki, react with alarm. Other samurai are gathered beneath a wooden bridge that arches across the entire scene. An interesting design with expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting.
