Comments - Charming design of the Meiji Empress and her ladies-in-waiting visiting Yasukuni Shrine on Kudanzaka Hill, walking under a large wooden torii gate draped with sacred ropes called shimenawa. The women all wear patterned robes over white kimono tucked into red hakama pants, one shielding the Empress with Western style umbrella. Men dressed in top hats follow behind the beauties. In the background at right, uniformed soldiers stand guard next to an ornate monument enclosed by a fence. An attractive scene, nicely detailed.
