List of Noble Ladies, 1879 - Handsome depiction of ladies of the Imperial Court enjoying a variety of pastimes, each identified by a name cartouche. At upper right, three women take part in a tea ceremony, while just below, a pair of beauties arranges flowers. At bottom center, a seated woman looks up at them from the scroll she is unrolling, while her friend with an open book watches the musicians at left. One of the women plays the biwa or Japanese lute while another removes the cover from a koto. Just above them, beauties write poem slips. The elegant room features a red floral carpet, and folding screens with peonies, red maple leaves, and a spotted deer at right. Wonderfully detailed, with embossing on the white kimono and kimono trim.
